梅飞雪 Feixue Mei is a designer, researcher, and transmedia artist based in Virginia, US, working across graphic design, experimental publishing, digital narrative, and participatory cultural production. Her practice examines how stories, images, and cultural knowledge circulate across media and communities, approaching publishing as a living cultural infrastructure. She develops Sino-Vernacular Networked Publishing (SVNP), a conceptual lens that draws on strategies from Chinese digital narrative cultures to support networked storytelling and cultural exchange across borders. She is the founder of Boundless Bound Publishing, an independent publishing and graphic design research platform. Through image-making, typography, sequencing, and circulation, her practice moves across pages, screens, spaces, and gatherings. She holds an MFA in Design/Visual Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University and is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at James Madison University.
Her scholarship on graphic design, experimental publishing, and Chinese digital narrative cultures has appeared in peer-reviewed journals including Source: Notes in the History of Art, Transformative Works and Cultures, the Journal of Creative Research Methods, and .able journal. She has exhibited at the Fanny Fox Decker Gallery at Maryland Institute College of Art, Palazzo Bembo in Italy, and Nanyang Technological University Centre for Contemporary Art in Singapore. Her publications are held in collections and archives at the Rhode Island School of Design, Printed Matter, and Virginia Commonwealth University, while her work has been featured in Creative Boom, People of Print, and e-flux. She has also presented research and chaired sessions at the College Art Association Conference, TypeCon, and the Popular Culture Association Conference. Selected commissions include Lux Capital, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
My practice begins with a simple instability: a story never remains the same once it moves. Across languages, platforms, and communities, images and texts are copied, translated, reformatted, misread, and returned in altered forms. I use graphic design and publishing to work inside this movement. Image-making, typography, sequencing, hierarchy, and interface shape what is encountered and what remains legible. Visual form becomes a sensitive materiality, altered by the identities and contexts through which it passes.
At the core of my practice is Sino-Vernacular Networked Publishing (SVNP), a conceptual lens that builds on strategies from Chinese digital narrative cultures to foster networked storytelling and cultural exchange across borders. Research on female-oriented xuanhuan webcomics has shaped this framework through their relationships among creators, readers, platforms, images, and cultural references. I translate these networked conditions into graphic design systems, approaching publishing as a structure through which cultural knowledge can move, gather, and change.
I work between creative coding and physical publication. Digital systems allow narratives to branch, accumulate, and respond; physical publishing gives that fluidity weight, sequence, and a temporary body. Dense, layered compositions bring inherited visual languages into contact with contemporary digital chaos, connecting the computational and the ancestral. Printing becomes a materializing ritual, capturing these collisions in their beautiful imperfection and giving fluid research a temporary form before it circulates again.
Through Boundless Bound Publishing and my broader transmedia practice, a page may become an exhibition; an exhibition may become a gathering; a digital exchange may return as printed matter. Publishing becomes a living cultural infrastructure through which stories, images, and cultural knowledge can be carried, reinterpreted, and changed by others.
